Heminger Health Library Code of Conduct

I. Purpose of Code of Conduct

While most library users (medical staff, hospital staff, patients and community members) conduct themselves responsibly, in the interest of protecting the rights and privileges of all library users, the following Code of Conduct has been established. The guidelines outlined herein are subject to change at any time.

II. Specific Behaviors/Responsibilities of Library Users Pertaining to: 

1.      Use & Protection of Collections

Library users will respect the collection, refraining from:

  • Damaging or mutilating materials in any way, including tearing or cutting out pages, marking or writing on pages
  • Theft
  • Unauthorized removal of materials
  • Improperly disposing of trash

2.      Use & Protection of Library Facility and Equipment

  • Users are allowed to consume food and beverages; beverages must be in a container with a lid
  • Users must clean up their space before leaving the library
  • Users must leave at closing and discontinue all use of equipment after closing announcements
  • Users must evacuate during drills and emergencies
  • Users may not abuse or vandalize equipment
  • To take library material out of the library, users must have a library card. Non-staff users must provide photo identification when applying for a library card

3.      Library Environment

Library users are expected to exhibit conduct appropriate for a hospital setting while using the library and demonstrate consideration of others, refraining from: 

  • Using cell phones while in the library
  • Disrespectful behavior towards library users or library staff
  • Leaving children unattended or unaccompanied
  • Posting flyers, brochures, or posters without library approval  
  • Loitering: Individuals not participating in research or educational endeavors will be asked to move to the tables by the coffee shop

4.      Library Policies/Fees

Compliance with library policies, and state and federal law means that users:  

  • Must comply with copyright law
  • May not misrepresent or falsify identification
  • Must abide by library policy regarding overdue items, materials recalled by the library, and the payment of fines and/or fees for lost/damaged library materials

5.     Copy Service

Use of the Health Library copier is limited to copying library materials and library users must abide by copyright restrictions.

6.     Computer Use

The Health Library has 4 public computer terminals and one network printer available for hospital staff, patients and community members with the understanding that they are to be used for medical research only. Computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Users are not allowed to download any software to the computers. Library response to inappropriate computer use may include revoking computer access privileges or contacting security.

III. Disciplinary Action

  • Users in violation of the Code of Conduct may be asked to leave
  • Security may be contacted
  • Library privileges may be limited, suspended, or revoked
